The Irish immigrated to this country “not with the idea of making fortunes in other lands, but to fly from a scene of suffering and death [4].” Ireland suffered from the great potato famine of 1845. This destroyed their country and the
conditions were unbearable for most. People were being kicked out of their homes with only a days notice. Disease swept through the country absolutely destroying the population. Death became so rampant that “dead bodies of children flung into holes hastily scratched in the earth, without a shroud or coffin;” since families couldn’t afford a proper burial [4]. In order to survive many of them any were forced to leave their homeland. In the Irish song Poor Pat Must Emigrate there is a line that explains how America was viewed by the Irish, “For there is bread and work [5].” That is why 1.5 million Irish migrated to America, in the hopes of opportunity; the hope to start a new life under new circumstances in a different country [6].
